Leading by example. If you are a senior executive with loyal team members, but you get the feeling they don't always take you seriously. The problem could be your leadership style.

If you think your leadership skills are lacking, consider leading by example. Here are some executive leadership coaching tips:

Be yourself. If you constantly give orders in the workplace yet you aren’t like that in life, you end up losing respect. If employees suspect you aren’t being yourself, they may not listen to you. If they see you act one way with your family and friends yet another way with them, they may feel slighted.

This will also encourage your employees to be themselves which could encourage customer and client loyalty. Be honest. You may think you will gain people’s trust by telling them what they want to hear. This, however, has the opposite affect.

Be honest in all of your dealings with clients, customers, and employees. People will understand that you “mean what you say”. If you express your opinions in a calm and helpful manner, your employees will follow your lead.

Live the golden rule. We all know the Golden Rule. Treat others how you want to be treated. Some managers demand this out of their employees. Yet, when it comes to treating their employees with that mantra, they fall short. How do you expect your workers to use this rule while at work if your behavior shoes otherwise?

Learn to listen. You want your people to listen to you. But, do you give them the same courtesy? It would be nice if they did what you told them to without questioning. Yet, when they have a complaint or something to share, do you ignore them? If you listen to them, they’ll listen to you. It’s that simple.

Don’t be negative. A positive environment is a pleasant one to work in. Is your workplace negative? Perhaps the problem is with you and not your staff. Spend a day listening. Tape your conversations if you need to. Do you complain a lot? Do you yell? Change this behavior and your work environment will be a lot more pleasant.

Work hard. If you work hard, so will your staff. There is nothing more discouraging to your staff than watching their leader do nothing. This is especially important if you tend to give them some of your workload. If you try to give them work yet they feel as if you don’t do anything, they will resent it. If you work hard, they’ll follow your example.

Bring balance to the workplace. Working hard is one thing. Working all the time is another. A healthy work environment is one where the employees lead balanced lives. Encourage a spirit of working hard, laughing hard, and going home when it’s time. Show them that it is possible to be productive in less time.
